Computex 2011: Biostar, Jetway and Giada Motherboards

Along with the main retailers, the minor ones are also showcasing products.  We’ve reviewed Biostar products before at AnandTech, but not Jetway and Giada, both of which are now selling consumer level products in North America.

Our main criticism with Biostar in the past is PCIe and feature placement.  On one series of products, Biostar has to a certain extent listened – the Z68 series have spaces between the PCIe x16 and space for a PCIe 1x and PCI.  However, the video outputs on the TZ68A+ are all spread out – meaning a lack of USB ports (two USB 2.0, two USB 3.0), only 2.1 channel audio, and no space for multiple LAN connections.  The SATA ports are also odd:

The TA990FXE however goes the other way – the video outputs are nicely positioned, as well as the SATA ports.  But the board offers four full length PCIe all next to each other and no other PCIe available if two dual slot GPUs are used.

Jetway has been producing motherboards for quite a while – if you’ve ever searched Newegg, you’ll find a few products in various categories and price points.  In terms of recent developments, Jetway has surprisingly produced a P67 and a Z68 board – what they deem their ‘Hummer’ series for their enthusiast consumers.  Two main features stand out when looking at the board – one if they have the rights to use the Hummer name in North America, and two that the memory compatibility is only to DDR3-1333 MHz.  You would expect higher-end products for enthusiasts to support the higher end memory speeds, but it’s up to the consumer to decide if they need it apparently. (Apologies for the images, Jetway decided to put a highly reflective glass in front of all their motherboards.)

Jetway have a series of Q67 products, mainly aimed at business and industry: one in particular has up to 10 COM ports possible – at the expense of only having one SATA port.  For AMD, they actually had a Hudson-D3 platform at the booth – again with the Hummer branding, and with 1333 MHz memory compatibility.  Though one thing I do like is that the extra power for the PCIe is at the bottom – as is becoming more common, the PSU is at the bottom of the case, so having this extra 4-pin power at the bottom of the board makes sense.

Giada is a division of the Shenzhen Jiehe Technology Development (JEHE) company based in China.  They have been selling in Asia for a while, and I noticed them starting to sell product over at Newegg for the US market.  So out of curiosity, I stopped by the booth at Computex to examine their range of products and a talk with the sales rep.  Giada’s current situation is to slowly move into various low-level motherboard segments within North America – currently they focus on mini-ITX platforms and the OTX form factor for all-in-one PCs (which is contrary to Intel trying to utilise thin mini-ITX).

For mini-ITX, Giada had an H55, H61 and H67 motherboards on show, all using one PCIe x16 and mini-PCIe.  At first glance the only thing that looks fairly odd is that the SATA ports are found just inside the DIMM slots, presumably making it hard to fit in cables if the slots are filled with memory and/or a large GPU is used.  An E350 Fusion board was also on the show, offering two mini-PCIe, using SO-DIMM memory and a rather odd SATA positioning as well.  I would also point out only one fan header on most of these models, suggesting that no serious coolers or fan controls would be present.

There was an ATX size Z68 on show, but apparently Giada has no intention of releasing this in North America just yet.  From the design, it doesn’t look too bad for the color scheme – there didn’t see much in the way of power delivery for overclocking however, and presumably no support for memory greater than 1333 MHz.

Review: Biostar TA790GXB3 T-Series Motherboard


Along with my own upgrades, I also upgraded my wife's system, beleive it or not she was still running an old Pentium 4/AGP 4x based system. Needless to say, horrible performance by today's standards, even for simple web use. She simply never wanted to upgrade, this year, I did not give her a choice.

Basically, I was looking for an inexpensive build that would still provide her system with more power than it would ever need. My basic requirements were it had to be AM3 with 125Watt CPU support, PCIe X16, full ATX form factor, SATA II, DDR3 1600 support with 4 DIMMS, and on-board audio and video as backup in-case stand alone cards fail.

I finally ended up settling on the Biostar TA790GXB3 T-Series Motherboard. Now I have never really been a fan of Biostar, not due to any quality concerns, just the fact I never used any of their boards in my own builds. However I decided it was time to give them a shot. They are a well established company that has been around for a long time and are pretty well known for their quality "budget" boards. So far, I am very satisfied with the performance of the TA790GXB3.

Simply put, I knew that Crossfire would never be needed, and that 125 Watt CPU support would be more than enough to meet the demands it would be put to. This board came with on-board Realtek ALC662 audio as well as on-board ATI Radeon HD 3300 DX10 video in case her stand-alone cards ever failed. This way she can still use her system while a replacement it ordered.

CPU used:

It also had full support for the processor I wanted to run in the system as well as core unlocking and overclocking ability. That processor being the AMD Phenom II X2 550 "Callisto" Black Edition. A CPU I was using for well over a year, unlocked to 4 cores and overclocked to 3.8Ghz, stable the entire time. So I wanted a board I knew I could do that on. For her needs however, I did not unlock the other 2 cores, I have left it running as an X2 and simply overclocked to 3.6GHz since there is no need to go any higher, it is just nice to know I can if the need should arise.

Video card used:

The most "demanding" game that she plays is the Sims 3. So when I purchased the XFX Radeon 6950 for my much higher end gaming needs, I gave her the HIS Radeon HD 4870 IceQ4+ Turbo 1Gb 256-bit GDDR5 card I was running. Needless to say, like the processor, a massive step up from the AGP ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB she was running. The 4870 was top of the line for the 4000 series of cards, and is still more than capable of playing any games on the market today at 1080p and maximum settings with stable framerates. It simply lacks DX11 support as well as next generation architecture and tessellation advancements obviously. For the Sims 3 however, it's not even a challenge. For as long as it lasts, this card will more than meet her graphics needs without even breaking a sweat.

Memory used:

I used the same RAM on this board as I do on mine. A-Data DDR3 1600G Gaming Series. She is currently running 4GB. The memory overclocks to 1600 no problem and is prefectly stable on this board.

Operating system used:

She was running XP Pro 32. With this new build however, I upgraded her to 7 Ultimate 32. This is also why she is running 4GB and not 8GB. I did not want her to have to deal with some of the compatibility issues of 64-bit that seems to be common with some of the software she runs on a regular basis. It's running wonderfully.

Overall impressions:

For the price, the Biostar TA790GXB3 seems to be a fantastic board. As long as you do not plan on Crossfire or running an X6 processor, it should have no problems meeting your budget build needs. It's great for low-end to moderate gaming, and even perhaps some high end gaming as well running a single GPU and a nice fast quad core with DDR3 1600. For what it is being used for here, it's an incredible value, especially since I managed to pick it up open box on Newegg. Great board from Biostar!

No Video, No Beep, MoBo LED Lights on, Fans don't spin, on a Biostar TF7100P - M7

The issues of the Biostar TF7100P - M7 Computer comes quites complicated. It shows no display, No beep, both fans of the CPU heat sink assembly and power supply fan won't spin, but the motherboard LED lights on. We may suspect that the video card or RAM must be failing but we can't be too sure. A thorough check must be done at the beginning of every computer troubleshooting. Assessing the present condition of the computer and observing for physical damage and other minute details must be carried out before anything else. To find out how we made the fix, see below.

INTERVENING FACTORS :

No Motherboard Support CD


OBSERVATION(S) :

Trying to turn on the system unit, the HDD LED on the front panel of the computer doesn't light. It has no display and there was no beep sound heard. The fans as we checked didn't spin. Our suspicion led us directly to the fault of the PSU but we cant be too sure.


TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE :

- Based on our earlier observations, we need to open the side cover of the system unit to check if there are observable physical defects on the components of the motherboard like burnt capacitors.

Of course safety is primarily considered. So every time you need to open the system unit case, always turn off the computer and unplug it from the avr.

- With the side cover removed, we then inspected for physical defects. We did not find any burnt capacitor or other components showing bold physical defect. So we considered removing the data and power cables from the drives and turned on the system unit to find out if the drives might be shorted and have cased the problem. Again, there was no change on the status of the computer.

- As the system unit "runs" with power, there was this hardly audible whistling sound coming from within the system unit. We furthered our observation and sharpened our listening and finally found out that the sound came from the Power Supply Unit.

- So we opened the PSU and found 1 burnt and 3 leaky capacitors!!! The PSU is defective! So we requested the owner of the system unit to buy a new 450 W ATX PSU rather than to replace the capacitors. We may be able to change the components (the leaky and burnt capacitors) but I strongly recommend to replace it a new one.

- After the replacement of the PSU with a new one, the system then powers up and displays the POST. We turned off the system unit and connected back the data and power cables to the drives. Turned it on and found out that we were not able to boot up. The operating system was corrupted and needs to be fixed.

- Trying to fix the operating system using the XP Installation CD, it failed. We also tried Spotmau and still did not succeed. So we just reinstalled XP without formatting the drive and backed up the files.

- After the file backup, we re-installed the operating system with fresh install. Since there was no motherboard support cd, we downloaded and installed the drivers of this Biostar TF7100P - M7 motherboard from the their website.

- Problem solved!


SUMMARY :

- Stubborn problems are most probably be caused by the the Power Supply Unit ( PSU )

- Use you senses in troubleshooting computers, like to listen for abnormal sound. Most likely, a whistling sound is caused by a leaky capacitor. That capacitor might be from the motherboard or power supply and in our case, from the PSU.
