AMD's Radeon HD 7970 gets reviewed

AMD has just pulled the tarp off its new AMD Radeon HD 7970 Southern Islands graphics card and we can finally unveil our thoughts on its brand new card and architecture.

It's the fastest single-GPU graphics card and also a graphics card of firsts.

The HD 7970 is the first GPU manufactured with 28nm transistors, is the first to support DirectX 11.1 (when that finally emerges) and the first to support PCI Express 3.0.

The first of these firsts is the biggy though and has allowed AMD to jam 4.3 billion of those 28nm transistors into the Tahiti XT graphics processor at its heart.

It also represents a new direction in graphics architecture for AMD, more in line with what Nvidia has been doing for years.

AMD is adamant it is no copycat though.

"From a purely technical point of view, the architecture that we've moved to is similar," says Mike Mantor, AMD Senior Fellow Architect. "On the GPU side though we've been investigating this scalar architecture for some time. We had good ideas how we'd go about it, what our gains would be and the cost of actually implementing it."

As well as being the fastest at stock clocks it's also one hell of a serious overclockers graphics card. We managed to push ours from 925MHz up to 1,125MHz.

The AMD Radeon HD 7970 is also rather expensive.

We don't have final UK prices yet but our best guess is around £450, with future overclocked versions coming in considerably more.

That's good news for Nvidia as it makes the impressive GTX 580 a far more reasonable proposition at just £365.

And talking of Nvidia, it's own new architecture, the Kepler-based graphics cards, will be available early Spring 2012. According to Nvidia insiders it's feeling quietly confident about its ability to compete with the Radeon HD 7970.

Review: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB

With the Sapphire Radeon HD 6950, we're getting into serious graphics card territory here, and inevitably that means serious money too. At over £200 that's a lot to spend on a single component if you're talking about an upgrade purchase.

But it's AMD's latest, and arguably greatest, GPU technology inside that Cayman processor and it's got some heavy-weight DirectX 11 graphical architecture backing it up.

Taking the seriously GPU taxing DirectX 11 tessellation-heavy benchmark of Metro 2033 there is no Nvidia card that can come close to managing double-figure frame rates at the highest 2,560 x 1,600 resolution until you get up to the £400-odd GTX 580. And even that card can only manage an extra 2fps over this impressive GPU.

It was an odd one from AMD's perspective as it launched both the HD 6950 and the other Cayman-powered card, the HD 6970, at the same time.

Despite the fact there was a gulf of around £80 in cost, there was very little between them in terms of raw performance. In the overclocking stakes the HD 6970 had the edge, but that was only down to the fact AMD had artificially limited the clockspeeds on the HD 6950 so as not to allow people to push the cheaper card as far as it's slightly more powerful brethren.

Stranger still was the fact that barely a week after release there was a BIOS flash for the HD 6950 that enabled you to open the dormant parts of the Cayman GPU to essentially turn it into a HD 6970 for free.

Hero card

That has made the original reference HD 6950 very much the hero card of the hour, and also much sought after.

Some recent respins though have come either with the dual BIOS switch disabled, or with lower frame buffers, both of which stop any flashing shenanigans you might wish to perform.

From a cynical point of view though, you could say it wasn't a coincidence that this happened at the same time AMD launched its multi-GPU HD 6990. Word from leading AMD manufacturers suggests we could still see new HD 6950s with the flashing reinstated.

As a graphics upgrade though, especially on the AMD side of the CPU war, the HD 6950 is definitely the one to aim for. It represents a huge step-up in power, even with the weakest of the CPUs, and when compared with the much more expensive GTX 570; that though, is on the AMD side.

When you factor in an Intel CPU based platform the AMD cards suddenly don't look quite so capable, and the more expensive Nvidia GPU wins the day.

Still, if you're rocking an AMD system then AMD graphics cards make the perfect match. Full platforms, innit?

Verdict

The ATI radeon HD5550 is mainly aimed towards the budget minded casual gamers, small form factors, home theatre pc and also for some low end professional work. With this card you get to have a small system like a HTPC with minimal noise levels and is mostly preferred nowadays due to their portability. It comes with directx 11 support and shader model 5.0, which are always a plus point for people who want to upgrade from older dying cards. For gamers it is not one of the jaw dropping cards but one can always overclock it and gain a few FPS in games and graphics applications. It is best to use this card with displays upto 22”(Resolution:1280x1024 to 1680x1050) for gaming as it simply cannot handle higher resolutions when anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering are taken into account and it can also be used to watch HD videos up to a resolution of 1920x1200. Finally, when combined with its $70 price tag it becomes a wonderful bargain and at the end of the day it is going to make you feel happy because you have made a great purchase. (NOTE: Do not buy the ddr2 version of this card, as it performs much slower than the ddr3 and ddr5 versions).

Verdict

First of all I would like to point out that it is the big brother to the ATI 5550 having 100mhz faster graphics power and appeals to a similar kind of market like the Htpcs, workplace pcs and casual gamers. It is a very low profile card with a maximum board power of around 45 watts and when you take its ~$80 price range it is definitely a must buy for entry level gamers. If the active cooling versions are not quiet enough for you than you can always go with the passive cooling versions from the likes of Powercolor and Asus. It overclocks good and comes with features like dx11, shader model 5.0, HD video, ATI stream technology and eyefinity support  through which you can hook this with up to 3 monitors. It is obviously not going to handle modern games across three monitors but will happily sail through the lower resolutions like 1680x1050 with a single monitor. And don’t go for the ddr2 versions of the card as they simply cannot keep up with the ddr3/ddr5 models. All of these features make the card worthy for its price and is easily available in any local computer shop shelves.

Verdict

This card is pretty amazing because it equals the likes of Nvidia 8800 and Ati 3800 series in terms of performance when compared to its small size, low power requirement and lower temperatures. The cooling is pretty good and quiet. This card beats the older generation ati 4670 by a fair margin due to its newer and improved architecture and design. It is perfect for video-editing, creating digital content and watching HD videos. Modern games like Splinter cell conviction, Medal of honor 2010, Civilization V and modern warfare 2 are even playable at a resolution of 1920x1080 in medium settings with a mid-range processor on-board. However, games like Crysis and Metro 2033 are not a pleasure to play at HD even at low settings. It offers acceptable level of play if you compromise on settings like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. Folks who game at 1680x1050, should get it right away if you are looking for an upgrade. If you are getting an Ati 5500 series card then its worthy to have a look on this card. Its pricing falls between $85 to$100, however for around $30 more you can get the ATI 5750 which gives a significant increase in amount of horsepower and performance when compared.
