Memory Performance on AMD's A-Series APU

Last month Legit Reviews reviewed the AMD A8-3850 'Llano' APU and our article looks like it was well received by our readers with the exception of one thing.  We've had a number of readers write in saying that it was great that we tested this platform with 1866MHz memory, but they are building budget systems and want to use 1333MHz or 1600MHz memory. It is true that we didn't look at performance numbers of AMD's A-Series APUs on the A75 chipset at 1333MHz, 1600MHz and since this platform is very budget friendly we see this as a valid point.

Legit Reviews does not want to ostracize any of our readers and pride ourselves on our no-BS straight forward and honest reviews, so we went back to the drawing board to get you the performance data you need before ordering in a new platform. We'll be using the Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H motherboard for testing again, but since we updated the BIOS to version F3 we re-did all of the performance numbers as we did see improved performance with the new BIOS.

We also got a few questions about how the platform handles 16GB of memory and if there are any stability issues with running all four memory slots fully populated. We've seen performance gains with all the memory slots full on AMD platforms in the past, so we'll be looking at 2x4GB and 4x4GB performance as well in our test results. Not too many people will be running 16GB of memory on the Llano A-Series APU, but we found no issues in doing so with G.Skill Ripjaws

So, to reiterate what our goals are for this article one more time:

  • Benchmark 2x4GB memory kits at 1333MHz, 1600MHz, 1866MHz to find performance differences

  • Benchmark 2x4GB versus 4x4GB to see if filling all the memory slots impacts performance

  • See if we have any issues running 16GB of memory 

This should be easy enough, so let's take a look at the test system and get right to the performance numbers.

IGP performance world record smashed on overclocked GIGABYTE Llano motherboard

TweakTown.com have published an article and video where they have our forthcoming A75M-UD2H motherboard pushing AMD’s latest Llano APU to achieve an incredible P6281 points in 3DMark Vantage (performance mode). TweakTown is claiming this overclock as a world record for an integrated graphics processor, further ramping up the buzz of expectation regarding AMD’s eagerly anticipated Llano APU platform launch later this week. We’ve put a lot of work into making our new Llano-compatible AMD A series boards the ideal base for these new Accelerated Processor Units, or APUs, so of course we’re totally chuffed to see a record-breaking overclock on one of our boards at this early stage.

 “You may have seen this type of configuration before, but not like how you are going to see in the video above. We managed to overclock the AMD CPU from its default clock speed of 2.9GHz all the way up to 3.6GHz (150 x 24) using an FSB of 150MHz. In turn this also overclocked the DX11 Radeon HD GPU within the AMD APU from a core clock speed of 600MHz to 900MHz. This is really impressive and we even saw Crysis 2 running at 720p at around 40 - 45 frames per second and from a system without a video card (strange to look at, actually), that is rather good.” – TweakTown

GIGABYTE officially launch AMD Llano A series Motherboards

Today we’re officially announcing the launch of our new A series motherboard range, supporting the very latest AMD APUs which we think will offer DIY builders a solid mainstream platform with added graphics muscle. We’ve announced seven motherboard models all based on the AMD A75 chipset. The top SKU is the GA-A75-UD4H which is an ATX form factor board with integrated HDMI, DisplayPort, Dual Link DVI and D-Sub video outputs, two PCIe ports (x16 and x8) supporting CrossFireX and a slew of features including 8 USB 3.0 ports, an 8+2 phase power VRM on a 2oz PCB – all in all, it’s one hell of a board.

We’re predicting that these new AMD APUs will invigorate the mainstream and entry-level DIY segment, offering some pretty decent graphics and 3D gaming performance as well as solid HD video capabilities. The integrated GPU on these Llano chips is really quite impressive. Here’s a video we made showing the platform playing Crysis 2 – not something you’d usually do without employing a discrete graphics card. As you can also see in the video, we also managed to squeeze a substantial overclock from our AMD A8350 APU, hitting a score of over 6000 points in 3DMark Vantage (performance mode). I’m sure you’ll agree….pretty impressive!

As you may have noticed, all these new A75-based boards will be sold as part of our Super4 motherboard product range. This basically means that you’re getting high-end components from top to bottom; features like 2ox copper PCB, 50,000 hour solid capacitors, dual BIOS chips, On/Off charging, dedicated fusing for each USB port and 108db HD audio. I guess GIGABYTE Super4 is a simple way to describe a range of features that will make sure you’re getting a really solid, durable and reliable motherboard regardless of price point.

Tom’s Hardware Takes a First Look at AMD Llano for the Desktop

Tom's Hardware recently took a look at the nuts and bolts of AMD’s new Llano platform and came upon some interesting analysis. First off, they gave a shout out to GIGABYTE, noting that our GA-A75M-UD2H features Dual-link DVI and is the only board they had that provided DisplayPort connectivity as well.

Also, GIGABYTE’s board was singled out for its overclock ability:

I spent a couple of late nights chatting back and forth with the fine folks at ASRock and Gigabyte, who helped in near real-time with BIOS builds. Eventually, I was able to get Gigabyte’s A75M-UD2H dialed in at nearly 3.4 GHz (it’d run in excess of that, but crashed under load) using a 23.5x multiplier and 145 MHz reference clock reflected as 143.5 MHz. The APU only needed a .05 V bump to achieve those numbers, too…

Other boards simply wouldn’t overclock well at all, failing long before we were forced to fight a bus speed idiosyncrasy.

They also noted that memory really matters with this platform:

Despite marginal gains in application performance, the bottom line here is simple: if you want to get the best horsepower out of a Llano-based APU, that graphics engine needs to breathe. Memory able to support a high data rate at low latencies is absolutely imperative for the best possible frame rates in games.

Don’t sweat DDR3-1866 if it means CAS 8 or 9 timings. Aggressively-tuned DDR3-1600 looks to be the sweet spot.

Stay tuned to our blog for the next couple of weeks, as we will be doing some testing to show how memory and even overclocking on this entry platform can lead to some great performance and more than just playable DX11 gaming.

Get up to speed with our A75-UD4H Llano with sin0822

We’re happy to tell you that veteran reviewer and enthusiast motherboard guru sin0822 has just posted a video featuring our top of the line AMD Llano motherboard, the GIGABYTE A75-UD4H. As you’d expect sin0822 covers virtually every aspect of the board from the 8+2 phase VRM, expansion slots, the external clock generator, the back panel I/O, the super IO chip and in fact pretty much every single piece of silicon attached to this board. How can else can I put it except to say this the A75-UD4h grande tour…get in and buckle up!

Tech Report examine AMD’s Llano on GIGABYTE A75M-UD2H

Here’s a great in depth article on the new A-Series APUs from AMD. Writing for TechReport.com, Scott Wasson compares these new APUs, codenamed Llano, to previous AMD platforms as well as Intel’s Sandy Bridge and Gulftown offerings. It’s an interesting read that examines the pros and cons of AMD’s Fusion architecture which places more emphasis on the graphics element than we’ve seen in the past. From a strictly Gigabyte perspective, we were also quite flattered to see that Tech Report based a lot of their testing and benchmarks on GIGABYTE boards.

For example Intel X58 Gulftown tests were performed on our X58A-UD5 board, AMD 800 series tests used the Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H while for the new AMD A8-3850 Tech Report selected the Gigabyte A75M-UD2H.

Coolaler.com Forums: Llano graphics out-paces AMD 6 series VGA card

Well-known Taiwanese reviewers at XtremeSystems have tested our Gigabyte A75M-UD2H motherboard and the AMD Llano A8-3800 APU. As well as looking at the A75M-UD2H board itself and its packaging, they also looked at how the A8-3800 APU and the A75M-UD2H teamed up in terms of basic performance and overclocking tests.

Interestingly, they also took the time to compare the new Llano A8-3850 APU with previous generation AMD architectures. They took AMD Athlon II X4 645 and Phenom II X4 970BE CPUs (both clocked at the same 2.9GHz), pairing them both with an AMD 6450 HD discrete card.

In terms of the actual CPU performance parts, the Llano APU just about wins in all the test against the Athlon II, but the gap is not too much, winning by a maximum 20% in CPUmark99. The Phenom II fairs marginally better, beating the Llano in some CPU tests. In terms of display performance however, the integrated Lynx GPU wipes the floor with the HD6450 discrete card on all benchmarks.

This is a really great demonstration of how AMD’s new Llano platform is offering a really compelling upgrade option for AMD users and DIY builders looking for a solid graphics and processing performance.

Desktop Llano Motherboards: The ASRock A75 Extreme6 Preview

It's been a while since we've discussed AMD motherboards at AnandTech—over the next few months, I am hoping to bring them back. To start, we have our first Desktop Llano product on the test bed—the ASRock A75 Extreme6. Unfortunately, what I've been testing is still 'a work in progress'—so there are issues with the BIOS and design still to be decided. For now I'll let you know what I've found, in terms of performance and design. But when the full board comes my way with release information, I'll post a full review. Read more for a sneak peak!

The AMD Llano Notebook Review: Competing in the Mobile Market

Today has been a long time in coming; we first heard about Llano way back in 2008, but even then the target date was 2011. Even so, AMD has been hurting for a compelling mobile platform since… well, since ever. Even in the glory days of the K8 platforms, AMD never had a great mobile strategy, a fact that Intel capitalized on with the launch of Banias and the original Pentium M Centrino platform in 2003. Presumably the goal of most laptops is to actually work well as mobile computing platforms, and prior to 2011 the best AMD could do was compete on performance and price, with battery life (e.g. actual mobility) never quite keeping pace with the times.

Earlier this year, AMD launched Brazos, their low-power alternative to Intel’s Atom ecosystem. It boasted better performance and much better graphics than Atom, with battery life that checked in at a respectable 8+ hours for a moderate 56Wh battery. Of course, there are Intel laptops that can provide battery life that’s very close to Brazos with general performance that’s 3x faster, so Brazos isn’t a panacea.

Enter Llano, the mainstream alternative to the low-power Brazos that brings AMD’s APU A-series to market with a much faster CPU and GPU. Llano is also AMD’s (GlobalFoundries’) first 32nm CPU, which brings AMD back to parity with Intel in terms of process technology. The process shrink should bring lower power requirements, smaller die sizes, and better performance. Add in power gating, Turbo Core, and expected pricing starting at $600 for quad-core laptops and the A-series starts to sound quite compelling.  So just how good is Llano, and can AMD finally start to steal more of the mobile market from Intel? Let’s find out.

Computex 2011: MSI's X79 and Llano Motherboards

By now you know that Ivy Bridge (due out in March - April of 2012) will be backwards compatible with some 6-series motherboards. The CPU itself has a PCIe 3.0 controller on-die, however MSI tells us that without modifications to existing motherboard designs you won't be able to properly support the 3.0 spec. 

MSI's Z68A-GD80 (G3) features new circuitry and switches between the CPU socket and the x16 slots that will apparently allow the motherboard to operate at PCIe Gen 3 speeds. The problem seems confined to the switches that motherboard makers use to automatically divide the 16 PCIe lanes coming from the CPU into 1 x16 or 2 x8. MSI claims that when Ivy Bridge comes out, the Z68A-GD80 (G3) will be fully PCIe Gen 3 compliant.

Of course MSI had a Socket-2011 X79 motherboard on display in addition to a pair of Socket-FM1 Llano boards. I'm hearing late summer for the desktop Llano launch at this point.

Those of you waiting for Bulldozer performance results from Computex, I'm afraid we're not going to see anything representative of final hardware. I did hear that the upcoming B2 stepping would restore performance to Bulldozer's original targets, however it's unclear how those compare to Sandy Bridge. The other thing I did hear at the show floor regarding Bulldozer was about its clock speed. Current B1 stepping parts are easily hitting 3.8GHz which is what the high end SKU may actually ship at (with turbo support up to 4.2GHz). I'm waiting for more confirmation but it sounds like Bulldozer will at least clock very high.

Computex 2011: ASRock Llano, 990FX and Z68 Motherboards

Computex 2011 is officially underway. Although technically it started yesterday with informal meetings at LAX, Ian and I kicked off our plethora of meetings at the show today with ASRock.

ASRock met with us this morning bearing goodies, three new motherboards to be specific.

First up was the A75 Extreme6, ASRock's Socket-FM1 motherboard designed to accept AMD's A-series Llano APUs. A number of leaks have already happened around Llano so if you want more details I'd suggest going to the source at this point. We're working on coverage of the platform but it'll be a little while longer before we can post on it.

Llano is mainly targeted at mobile systems first, but we will see desktop platforms going forward. Llano will become AMD's mainstream desktop CPU over the coming quarters, replacing the Athlon II and Phenom II in many cases.

Just above Llano we will have the long awaited Bulldozer CPU. AMD originally wanted to launch Bulldozer at Computex but performance issues with its B0 and B1 stepping chips pushed back the launch. Now we're looking at a late July launch with B2 silicon, but performance today is a big unknown. Apparently the performance of B1 stepping silicon doesn't look too good.

Bulldozer will be mechanically compatible with Socket-AM3 motherboards but AMD will only officially support the CPU on AM3+ motherboards. To differentiate AM3+ from AM3 motherboards AMD is releasing a new chipset: the 9-series. Functionally the 9-series chipset is no different from the 8-series that it replaces; it'll simply be used on AM3+ boards exclusively.

ASRock showed us its high-end 990FX motherboard: the Fatal1ty branded 990FX Professional:

Obviously a very high end motherboard, ASRock included two front panel USB 3.0 headers on its 990FX board. There are also three PCIe x16 slots and six 6Gbps SATA ports driven off of the 990FX chipset itself.

Finally we have ASRock's Z68 Professional motherboard, once again with Fatal1ty branding. At Jonathan Wendel's (Fatal1ty) request, the Z68 Professional includes an IDE port for optical drives and a floppy drive connector as well.

Computex 2011: ECS X79 and Llano Motherboards

I’ve been running around the Computex show floor all morning and finally managed to build enough of a lead ahead of my meetings to sit down and write up some of what I’ve seen.

Ian is going to be meeting with most of the motherboard makers at the show but I just stopped by ECS’ booth and got a look at its lineup of three Socket-FM1 Llano (A-series APU) motherboards and a Socket-2011 Intel X79 motherboard for use with Sandy Bridge-E due out later this year.,

SNB-E has four 64-bit DDR3 memory channels which makes routing a pain. Motherboard manufacturers are dealing with the incredible number of traces by splitting the channels up and routing half of them on one side of the CPU and the other half on the other. LGA-1366 boards by comparison had all six slots on a single side of the CPU, but there were "only" three channels.

 ECS is going to be shipping both ATX and microATX Llano boards later this summer. As I mentioned earlier, Llano will first launch as a quad-core mobile solution with dual-core and desktop versions following later. {gallery 1092}]]>

AMD Llano brings "Fusion" to hybrid graphics laptops @ arstechnica.com

AMD ships Llano, the ultimate HTPC processor

 

It has been five years since the AMD/ATI merger promised us the "Fusion" of a CPU and GPU onto a single die, and on Monday AMD finally made good on that promise with the shipping of the company's first true multicore CPU/GPU combo parts, codenamed "Llano." Sure, the Brazos platform launch was technically the first time that AMD put a CPU and GPU onto the same die, but Llano is supposed to be what the company originally intended with Fusion—a combination of CPU cores and vector hardware that's somehow more "integrated" than a normal on-die GPU. (The exact way in which the latter is true is not clear to me; if anyone knows, feel free to enlighten.)

The picture above is from AMD's blog post announcing that Llano is shipping to OEMs, and it shows the workers in the company's Singapore factory surrounding a box that presumably contains one of the first batches of Llano processors.

AMD is calling Llano's combination of a CPU and GPU on the same die an APU, for "accelerated processing unit." Whatever you call it, it's pretty certain that even tech-savvy customers are never going to see Llano as anything other than another CPU/GPU combo part like Brazos and Sandy Bridge. No matter, though—the Llano parts will have their own place in the processor ecosystem, and it will be different from that of Sandy Bridge.

There is no chance that Llano's CPU core will outperform that of Sandy Bridge, given that the former is a straight-up derivative of AMD's existing Phenom II core. But Llano's GPU is another matter entirely. AMD has used their considerable experience in building best-in-class integrated graphics processors (IGPs) to pack a ton of GPU performance onto each Llano die. Llano will be a great gaming portable, and Llano desktops should offer extremely good price/performance ratios for gamers.

If Intel can get the performance of Sandy Bridge's trailing-edge GPU design up to the point where it can outperform low-end discrete graphics cards, then Llano should do even better. Llano's DirectX11-class GPU will beat Sandy Bridge's GPU by a comfortable margin, and should compete with mid-range discrete solutions. Intel won't have anything comparable until its Ivy Bridge launch early next year.

So from now until Ivy Bridge comes up, AMD will have the budget performance notebook and desktop segment pretty much to itself with Llano. Llano will also make a monster of a home theater PC chip, because you'll be able to build a relatively cheap HTPC with some serious gaming chops.

AMD has said that the first Llano parts will show up in laptops, with desktop parts likely to follow later in the summer. The company isn't giving out any details on which specific products are shipping, though—we'll probably get this info as part of an official launch, soon.

AMD disclose its latest 32nm build process ( AMD Llano )

It’s been really tight between Intel and AMD in the high-end level of processor. Intel take first lead by introducing 32nm build process. Meanwhile, the archrival AMD is planning to carry on that legacy to the next level.
AMD manufacturers announced their laptops and desktops 32nm A-sereies chips. The product will be launched to the consumer in the first half of 2011. For very first time, AMD launch their 32nm system and its look like an achievement for AMD.
Intel equipped their 32nm build process with Core i3, i5, and i7 in Westmere Family. Experts like Dan Olds said that AMD has good opportunities to capitalize on it. Surely, AMD joined later the group of manufacturers bringing out the 32nm build process.  We can see that AMD actually in good condition and really awesome. So, it will be definitely good news for technology lovers especially in computer hardware.
Charles King, Pund-IT analyst said that because AMD collaboration with Llano future appears better. We can’t doubt that Llano is better terms of the feature and performance of the GPU chips. It recycles its AMD Phenom II products and target the low cost PC market. Tentatively, in outer market AMD has no opportunity of attaining supremacy. Nevertheless, AMD is doing their job better and better with GPU trimming year by year. In the other hand, Intel is doing their best card with help from latest technology and working on its robust graphic features.
AMD is already little behind by their rival Intel by developing its 22nm process. Even though they have chance to lead ahead by releasing 22nm process, AMD still focus on their Fusion processors. In term of graphics and server chips AMD is having a slight edge.

Laptops with AMD’s Llano chip soon

AMD make new innovation again and again to beat their rival Intel. They’re really serious about their new 32nm processor to stay in battle with Intel Sandy Bridge. They are also confident that they can follow or take a lead to Intel. But, they’re not only focusing their new processor for desktop but also for laptops in mainstream-level.
This new chips, codenamed Llano, are targeted to top and mainstream laptops and desktops, which will be priced at $499. AMD’s last fresh chip was in May last year, when AMD launched new dual-, triple- and quad-core processors.
Of course, we are as the consumer very excited and happy about Llano coming to market. Llano is the future of all processor. Why? Because it combine / integrated the CPU and GPU on one chip, which can help laptops deliver faster application and graphic performance even though in less power.
Llano chips will be the first processor from AMD that use 32nm manufacturing process. This improvement will help reducing power consumption. And it’s exactly Llano chips will compete against Intel’s Sandy Bridge microprocessors, which all of us know it also combined a CPU and GPU on a single chip.
